Why your workout is doing more for your brain than your body

A few years ago, as my 40th birthday came into view, I decided to get back into my body. I’d been a yoga person since my late teens, and it carried me through two pregnancies in my twenties before fading to almost nothing once I had two kids who needed most of my attention. So I signed up for one reformer Pilates class to see what would happen.
One was all it took. Within a few months I was going five times a week, chasing the intensity and hooked on the changes I could see and feel. More energy. More confidence, and not only in how strong my body was getting. I started trusting my own discipline and will in a way I never had. A couple of years later I added weight training with a personal trainer once a week and swapped my reformer classes for a strength-based Xformer practice. Now I start almost every day with movement, either a training session or an Xformer class.
What I built without planning to was a habit that makes me better at everything else. I’m more in tune with my body and mind than I ever was in my twenties or thirties, which counts for more now that perimenopause has shown up and cranked the volume on everything. (Think puberty, with more rage and a lot more standing in doorways wondering what I came in for.) Exercise is a non-negotiable for me. Without it, I’d probably have divorced my whole family by now.
The surprise was how little of it had to do with the mirror. The visible changes were real, but they weren’t the only thing that kept me coming back. That instinct, it turns out, has a stack of science behind it.
Rio Wilson, a counselor and the founder of Brain-Body Therapy, has built her career on the idea that movement is one of the most powerful and most overlooked tools for emotional health. She holds a master’s in counseling from Northwestern and came to the work through her own history with trauma, anxiety, depression, and complex PTSD. When I asked why she argues the brain benefits more from exercise than the body does, she pointed to timing. The physical payoff, the weight and the muscle and the smaller jeans, takes weeks or months. The brain doesn’t make you wait.
“We’ve been measuring exercise by its slowest results instead of its fastest ones,” she told me. One workout can start shifting your chemistry almost immediately, which is why people so often walk out of a session less anxious, less foggy, and steadier than they walked in.
What exercise does to your brain
As you move, your brain releases a mix of neurotransmitters that change how you think and feel in real time. Dopamine drives motivation and that sense of accomplishment when you finish. Norepinephrine sharpens attention and helps you handle stress. Serotonin steadies your mood. Endocannabinoids, the compounds behind the so-called runner’s high, bring the calm and the quieted anxiety. Over a longer horizon, exercise also raises levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which Wilson calls “fertilizer for the brain.” It helps neurons grow and connect and supports the brain’s ability to adapt, learn, and recover.
None of that registers on a scale. What you notice instead is quieter. Your thoughts settle. You’re less reactive. A problem that felt tangled looks a little clearer. According to Wilson, the workout is helping you move from one nervous-system state into another, and you are not imagining the shift.
How exercise supports emotional regulation
When I told Wilson I was already a convert and asked what I might still be underestimating, she said the benefit doesn’t stop when the endorphins fade. My workouts are quietly helping me concentrate, sleep, tolerate frustration, and move between the forty things a day asks of me. Beyond that, she said, movement may be widening the gap between a stressful moment and my reaction to it. “That space, where you can choose what happens next, is one of the most valuable things movement can give you.”
If you have ever felt the difference between reacting to a toddler meltdown and responding to one, you already know the value of that gap. Wilson frames the long-term work as building capacity. Just as muscles get better at handling load, the nervous system can get better at handling challenges and returning to baseline afterward. She’s careful to define that as resilience rather than some permanent state of calm, a stronger ability to feel stress without being flattened by it.
Why feeling better beats looking smaller
Wilson was blunt about why we default to the visible stuff. “We reach for visible numbers because they are concrete,” she said. “A scale gives us an answer in seconds. We can count pounds, repetitions, steps, or inches. It is much harder to measure the moment you pause instead of losing your temper, recognize that your anxiety is rising before it takes over, or recover from a stressful day more quickly than you once did.” Her fix is to change the question we’ve been trained to ask. “We have been taught to ask, ‘Is my body getting smaller?’ rather than, ‘Is my life becoming more manageable?'” The second question is harder to photograph and worth a great deal more.
If you want to put any of this to use, match the movement to the state you’re in. Wilson notes that heavy lifting demands focus and hands you a hit of mastery, an Xformer or Lagree class trains balance and constant attention, and something chill, like a long walk lets your mind process and settle. On an agitated day, intensity might discharge the energy or wind you up further. On a depleted day, a walk may do more for you than grinding through a punishing session.
As far as that “no pain, no gain” mentality which, if we’re being honest, isn’t the most marketable way to instill an exercise habit, Wilson offers a welcome perspective. “Intensity still has value, but it should be purposeful rather than punitive. There are days when a challenging session creates exactly the neurological and emotional shift someone needs. There are also days when gentle movement is more appropriate. Frequency matters because the brain responds to repeated experiences, but recovery matters too.” Listen to your body, and do what the day allows for. And take those rest days without feeling guilty about it. After all, according to Wilson, “more exercise is not automatically more therapeutic.”
Wilson won’t sell movement as easy, least of all to the people who need it most. She has had stretches of depression when working out felt impossible. “Sometimes the symptoms that exercise may help are the very symptoms making it hardest to begin,” she said, which is an important validation.
I don’t have a tidy fix for that. What I have is a standing date with an Xformer bed and a set of dumbbells, and the knowledge that the version of me who keeps it is calmer, sharper, and considerably more pleasant to live with. If you already move and already feel this in your body, consider it confirmed. What’s holding up under all that repetition is your nervous system, and everyone in your house benefits when it’s steady.
