Eric Carle may be most famous for bringing “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” to life. The brightly colored story is one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, with more than 55 million copies sold since its debut in 1969.

Carle produced more than 70 books during his storied career, eventually earning the prestigious Laura Ingalls Wilder Award (now called the Children’s Literature Legacy Award) from the American Library Association in 2003.

Sadly, the artist and illustrator died this week at the age of 91. His son, Rolf, said the cause was kidney failure.

Carle wrote and illustrated some of our very favorite books. We have fond memories of reading “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” as children; now, we read them to kids of our own.

His legacy will live on in his art and on our shelves.

That’s why we’re rounding up some of our favorite Eric Carle books:
