By Heather Marcoux September 28, 2020 Chrissy Teigen/Instagram Rectangle Chrissy Teigen is speaking out about her high-risk pregnancy, addressing fans from her hospital bed this week. Teigen, who is expecting her third child with husband John Legend, says she’s been dealing with non-stop bleeding during this pregnancy due to her “really weak” placenta. She’s about halfway through her pregnancy but she’s bleeding significantly. “It’s just hard because there’s not much you can do,” she explained in an Instagram story, suggesting that her baby boy is a strong little dude living in a damaged house. Right now though, there’s not a lot her medical team can do to fix her baby’s “house.” She explained: “We’re in that weird in-between time where you can’t really do anything…I’m taking my progesterone, my iron—trust me, we’re on it.” “We’re talking more than your period, girls, and definitely not spotting,” she said from a hospital bed Sunday night. “A lot of people spot, and it’s usually fine, but mine was a lot. Every time I went to the bathroom, it would be blood, and honestly just laying there it would be blood, but today the big difference was like, if you turned a faucet on to low and just leave it there.” “It was at the point today where it was just never stopping bleeding,” she said. “It’s always been kind of the bad part of my pregnancies…With Luna, with Miles—it just stopped feeding him, taking care of him. I was stealing all of his food because I was getting huge, but he wasn’t getting big at all.” Luckily, Teigen has some support in the hospital. Her husband was there making sandwiches, resting in a chair and generally making sure his partner was as comfortable as possible. If we didn’t love John Legend before, we sure do now. Teigen has not said exactly what her diagnosis is, but there are a couple of conditions that can cause severe bleeding in pregnancy related to a “weak” placenta. Placenta previa means the placenta is covering the cervix and this can result in “severe bleeding during pregnancy and delivery,” according to the Mayo Clinic. Placenta abruption is rarer and means “the placenta partly or completely separates from the inner wall of the uterus before delivery”. Placenta previa is more likely but Teigen doesn’t want to overshare when it comes to this condition. “You have to trust me that I have very good doctors who know the entire story,” Chrissy said. “There’s so much more than you could ever, ever imagine. I share a lot, but I don’t share everything, okay? Trust me when I say they know.” It’s amazing that Teigen is using her platform to talk about how hard pregnancy can be and to educate moms-to-be on what they should do if they are bleeding. According to Motherly’s Digital Education Editor, Diana Spalding (a midwife and author of The Motherly Guide to Becoming Mama), about 20% of women have a small amount of vaginal bleeding during early pregnancy. Someone like Teigen, who is halfway through her pregnancy is having a different issue. “If you experience spotting, give your doctor or midwife a call—they’ll want to rule out something more serious, like a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or problem with the placenta,” says Spalding. Thank you, Chrissy, for sharing as much of your story as you feel is right. It lets other moms who might be going through this know that they’re not alone.
