Kelly Clarkson and Alanis Morissette perform the duet of every millennial’s dreams

When this video popped up amid my Instagram algorithm, I of course stopped everything I was doing to watch two of the most talented women from my formative years sing a breathtaking duet. And you will, too.

Morissette made a special appearance and surprised the audience with a performance of her hit song “You Oughta Know,” and Clarkson joined in for one of her show’s new segments called “Songs & Stories.”

“The duet we’ve always dreamed of,” the caption reads.

“My dream was to have Alanis Morissette for ‘Songs & Stories’ because she is literally the reason why I am a songwriter,” Clarkson admitted. “I bought my first dictionary because of you,” the host said. “I was very young, and I was like, ‘What are these words? They mean something and I just need to look them up!’”

One of my core memories is of my best friend’s older sister playing her “Jagged Little Pill” CD in their basement while we all just sat and listened to it. When the more colorful language exploded through the speakers, I will never forget my bff’s mom shutting it DOWN right then and there (we were only 10). Ha, good times.

And, you know, every millennial remembers where they were and what they were doing when they found out “You Oughta Know” is about none other than Dave Coulier, aka Joey Gladstone.

“This song,” Clarkson said about “You Oughta Know,” “I feel like this is my ‘Since U Been Gone,’ like everywhere I go they want to hear this song … because the entire audience went crazy on tour, I mean you saw everyone unleash every bad relationship they’ve ever been through and channeled it.”

Morissette says she totally gets it, and that Clarkson isn’t the only person who feels that way.

“I do [still love singing it],” Morissette said. “I just remember my landlord, before “Jagged Little Pill” came out, was lovely enough, we had a great interaction. And then after ‘You Oughta Know’ was released … she ran into me and she was like, ‘I just have to tell you that I didn’t like your music when it first came out, and then I got divorced, and now I love you.’”
