Amy Schumer says IVF made her feel like she was ‘gonna die’

Amy Schumer is getting candid about her personal experience with in-vitro fertilization. She first shared the news that she was undergoing IVF back in 2020, and now she’s sharing how the whole experience made her feel—then and now.

In a recent episode of Chelsea Handler’s podcast, Dear Chelsea, Amy Schumer said she had a difficult time with IVF when she and her husband, Chris, tried to conceive their second child. They’re already parents to son Gene, who will be three this spring.

“I did IVF, we made embryos and I went through the IVF process, which is so hard. People do it so many times. I did it one time and I was like, I’m gonna die. This is awful,” she said on the podcast.

Schumer said while they retrieved 31 eggs during the process, only one usable embryo came out of it—and, unfortunately, that embryo didn’t take. Last year, she underwent surgery to remove her uterus and appendix due to severe endometriosis. Which means she can no longer carry a baby of her own.

“So we’re gonna have just one child and we’re just enjoying our little family and I’m just focusing on that,” Schumer said about Gene. “I’m excited about it but I was sad. And it’s not really something you get sympathy for because it’s like, you already have one b*tch, shut up. But you know, that’s a real struggle people go through.”

Endometriosis is a common and painful condition where the tissue that lines the uterus begins to grow outside of it with no known cause. It affects approximately one in 10 American women, but women can go years without being diagnosed because some assume it’s just par for the course when it comes to menstruation.

Additionally, many women experience secondary infertility—which is classified as the inability to conceive a child or carry a pregnancy to full term after previously giving birth without help from fertility medications or treatments.

Her health journey hasn’t gotten Amy Schumer down. She’s a proud mama regardless, and now she’s pain-free from endometriosis post-surgery.

“We tried, but yeah we’re just gonna have the one perfect little adorable angel.”
