Here's what to do: In cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety administration (NHTSA), Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of 83,000 Maxi-Cosi Pria 85 Convertible child seats because the seat may not adequately protect larger children from head injury in the event of a crash. Why is the Maxi-Cosi car seat being recalled? According to the press release, “When the seat is installed in the forward facing position and secured to the car using the lap belt without also using the top tether, the seat may not adequately protect the child from head injury in the event of a crash.” The seats, that were designed for children weighing between 14 and 85 pounds, pose a risk to children weighing more than 65 pounds when seated forward-facing. At this point, no incidents or injuries have been reported. The recall comes because in testing, the seat failed to correctly restrain the test dummy, thereby failing to meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS 213), which governs child restraint systems. According to Consumer Reports, these crash-tests are conducted on a bench seat using only a lap belt (as opposed to a three-point lap and shoulder seat belt) and without the top tether strap connected.
