By Zara Hanawalt March 30, 2021 Ellie Goulding/Instagram Rectangle There’s this unofficial “rule” when it comes to announcing your pregnancy: You’re expected to wait until you exit the first trimester to share the news with the outside world. But here’s a rule we abide by: Pregnant mamas should announce their news whenever (and to whomever) they wish. Whether that means sharing a photo of your pregnancy test immediately after it turns positive or pulling a Kylie Jenner and sharing the news once that bundle of joy is in your arms, your pregnancy is your story to tell. That’s why we love that Ellie Goulding waited to announce that she’s expecting her first child until she felt ready to do so. “Just a few more weeks to go. And then I will be a mum… It still feels strange to say those words out loud,” Goulding, who revealed her pregnancy at 30 weeks, told The Telegraph of expecting her first child with husband Caspar Jopling. As for why she didn’t reveal her news earlier? “I needed time to get my head around it,” the singer explained. “Last year I released an album and I’d finished writing a book. Then, after living in lockdown, walking around in my husband’s big coats to hide my bump and living in different places in Oxfordshire and London, we moved into a new house. Our house. It felt like we had these proper roots and it was the right moment to say something.” data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-version=”4″ style=” background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:658px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% – 2px); width:calc(100% – 2px);”> We get it! When I was pregnant with my twins, part of me wanted to shout my news from the rooftops, while another part was way too nervous to do so. When I was around 21 weeks, I finally felt in my gut that I was ready to tell the rest of the world, and that’s what I did. And let me tell you: It felt pretty good to do it on my own terms. If you want to hold onto that pregnancy news until you’re ready to share, then go for it, mama. If you want to share it with the world, know that we support you, too. Plus, sometimes it helps to lean on friends for support—especially during pregnancy. That’s something Goulding knows a bit about. Throughout her pregnancy, she’s turned to some of her mom friends for advice. Who is Goulding leaning on? Princess Eugenie and Katy Perry, of course. “[Princess Eugenie has] been a great friend throughout this,” Goulding said. “We’ve talked a lot about pregnancy and she’s been inspirational because she just takes everything in her stride. Katy [Perry] has been great too, and my manager has gone through her pregnancy with me, along with both our families and friends from home who have had babies. It just brings everyone closer together.” We would love to be part of that text chain! In all seriousness, we love to see moms supporting other moms. Becoming a parent is a transition unlike any other—and new moms need all the love and support they can get.
