And it might have found the next big hit: There’s an American Girl Doll live-action movie coming, and millennials everywhere are not prepared for this. Mattel has partnered with Paramount Pictures for the upcoming movie, which will be written and produced by Lindsey Anderson Beer. “Growing up, my sister and I were American Girl girls,” Anderson Beer said in a statement. “I had Kirsten, and she had Molly. They didn’t feel like dolls to play with, rather real people whose worlds we got to imagine ourselves in. The dolls often come with books that help educate kids about the times they represent. The first American Girls, Samantha, Kirsten, and Molly — were from the World War II era. After Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” became a runaway, record-breaking success at the box office, the toy company has movies in the works based on Polly Pocket (directed by Lena Dunham and starring Lily Collins) and Barney (produced by Daniel Kaluuya). Now all that’s left to decide is who will play the iconic roles of Samantha, Kirsten, Molly, and the many other dolls that came later.
