5 nursery trends we loved in 2017—and can’t wait to see more of in 2018

From washable rugs to playful nursery bedding, and Moses baskets to temporary wallpaper, 2017 was a great year to be a design-loving mama.

We’re taking a look back at our favorite trends of the year in one of our favorite places—the nursery—and looking ahead at what’s to come in 2018.

1. Washable rugs

Guys, WHY DIDN’T WE THINK OF THIS? We started noticing this trend earlier this year, and now we’re watching it really pick up speed. And for good reason. Washable rugs are just that—rugs that you can pick up directly off of your floor and pop right into your washing machine. No more stressing over spit-up stains, diaper explosions, or shoe dirt. It’s seriously genius.

Our absolute faves are from designer extraordinaire Lorena Canals. Her washable area rugs come in a huge selection of gorgeous colors + patterns, and they hold up beautifully in the wash.

2. Playful nursery bedding

From donut sheets to ice cream cone quilts, nursery bedding + accessories really stepped up their game this year. Whether you’re into bold + bright or soft + muted, we saw so many styles in 2017 that would make any room totally Insta-worthy.

One of our standout faves for bold, playful bedding this year is the Australian brand Kip & Co. We ? their velvet play mats—they are made from soft, quilted fabric and offer just the right amount of padding for your little one. They’re also easy to pick up and move from room to room.

Their crib bedding is also some of the most fun and creative we’ve seen. Because baby + sprinkles = awesome.

And speaking of crib bedding, we cannot get enough of the aaamazing crib sheets from Rookie Humans. Each distinct style features a custom illustration and just the right amount of whimsy.

3. Temporary wall art

The indecisive mess-hater deep within us could not love this trend more. From reusable and removable wall decals to temporary wallpaper that’s easy to install and doesn’t require icky, messy glue, temporary wall art was totally on-trend in 2017 and, much to our delight, shows no signs of slowing down in 2018.

The fabric wall details from Australian brand Love Mae are some of our favorites. They come in a huge array of beautiful designs, are durable, and best of all are 100% reusable and removable.

And if you’re looking for a bigger design statement, you need to check out temporary wallpaper. It’s easy to install (truly, we promise) completely mess-free, and livens up any space. There are tons of brands to choose from, but our favorites are Tempaper, Chasing Paper, Walls Need Love, and Spoonflower.

4. Moses baskets

Moses baskets have been around forever but have seen a huge surge in popularity in 2017, and we totally get it: they’re beautiful, functional, and multi-use. We can’t get enough, and we have our fingers crossed that the trend will continue throughout 2018.

Plum + Sparrow—though a bit of a splurge—gave us our true favorites this year. Their baskets are one-of-a-kind, handmade by a group of weavers in a small village in Africa, durable, and completely stunning. They work with almost any nursery decor, and provide a cozy, easily portable spot for baby.

5. Versatile, multipurpose products

Minimalism for the win here, mamas. Nothing gets us more excited than something that can do double—or even triple—duty, especially when it comes to nursery items, which is why we were so excited to see this trend really take off in 2017.

We fell in love with these awesome, retro lights from Spanish brand Goodnight Light. They’re a lamp + nightlight + super cool design statement all in one, and they work in a nursery, toddler/big kid room, and pretty much anywhere else you want to add some fun. What can we say—we’re suckers for a cute pineapple lamp ?

We also love this handmade seagrass changing basket from Olli Ella. It’s great in the nursery, but can live on long after diaper days are over as a tray, storage basket, or room decor.
