The five-minute tricks that turn family movie night into the highlight of the week

As my kids get older and spend more time out of the house, I find myself clinging to our at-home traditions a little tighter. Monday through Thursday are packed with camp, swim meets, and pick-up basketball games, so when Friday night rolls around and my 8-year-old son looks at me with anticipation to ask about movie night, you better believe I want to make it feel special.

I remember my own dad hauling out the old popcorn machine, melting the butter, and popping in a VHS tape while my brother and I argued over whether all the lights should go off or if we could leave one lamp on. Halfway through, we’d pause for bowls of ice cream before bed. I want my kids to have those same core memories to hold onto, so for us, family movie night is sacred.

That said, we’re two full-time working parents. We can’t pull off an over-the-top themed screening every single week. So over time, we’ve picked up a handful of five-minute tricks that make our Friday night tradition a family favorite, no extra planning required.

Cue the lights.

Most of our week doesn’t look cinematic at all. It’s homework at the kitchen table, reading before bed, the usual scramble. We swapped a few lamps around the house for Govee Table Lamp Classic. Pick a movie with intention.

They take turns choosing the movie each week, and we treat it like a real responsibility. Whoever’s turn it is has to explain why they think everyone else will love the pick. When my son chose Moana, he said it was because he loves adventure, Mommy loves the beach, his little sister loves princesses, and Daddy loves being goofy. It teaches them about consideration and taking other’s preferences into account, which is something siblings don’t normally excel at doing.  

Set the scene. 

My son, ever the “big boy,” likes to watch movies fully in the dark, like a real movie theater, while my 4-year-old gets a little spooked. Snacks, snacks, and more snacks. 

Popcorn is a daily staple in our house, so for movie night we really try to amp it up with candy or mini marshmallows on top for a sweet and salty topping. We also add pebbled ice in the drinks and a warm bowl of pretzel bites for the kids so it really feels like we’re going to the movies. 

Get cozy. 

There’s no fighting over the best seat in the house because everyone already has a designated spot on the floor. Every couch cushion and pillow in the house finds its way into the basement during movie night and we help them bring their fort vision to life. 

None of this requires a themed menu or a Pinterest board. It’s usually a movie we’ve already seen, snacks we already have in the pantry, and lighting we control from our phones. My kids know that no matter how chaotic the week has been, Friday night means the lights go low, the popcorn comes out, and for two hours it’s just us.
