Home / Pregnancy Pink perfectly explains the pain of miscarriage: ‘You feel like your body is broken’ Pink says she's "had several miscarriages", the first at age 17. By Heather Marcoux April 30, 2019 Rectangle Pink has been such an open book from such an early age. Her first album came out 19 years ago, and she’s been sharing her emotional wounds and expressions of love with us through song ever since. But there is one thing she hasn’t opened up about until now. Her latest album, “Hurts 2B Human,” includes a song that contains the lyric “since I was 17, I’ve always hated my body / and it feels like my body’s hated me.” While many women feel at odds with their bodies due to society’s sometimes insane beauty standards, Pink tells USA Today that’s not what she was talking about. The song is actually about pregnancy loss, and when you look at it from that perspective it is even more haunting and beautiful. “The reason I said (that) is because I’ve always had this very tomboy, very strong gymnast body, but actually at 17 I had a miscarriage,” Pink tells USA Today, “And I was going to have that child. But when that happens to a woman or a young girl, you feel like your body hates you and like your body is broken, and it’s not doing what it’s supposed to do.” Now mom to 7-year-old Willow and 2-year-old Jameson, who she shares with husband Carey Hart, 39-year-old Pink is also opening up about how the miscarriage she had at 17 was not her last. “I’ve had several miscarriages since,” she says, adding that she’s always believed it is important to talk about the painful parts of life, and that she’s always included them in her writing. Pink credits therapy with helping her deal with some of that pain, and for getting her relationship with Hart to the place it’s in now. She says her husband is so supportive, and that’s reflected on the new record. “He’s the biggest part of my village,” She explains, adding that “Hurts 2B Human” is “not as angsty and marital as previous records. There’s certainly not a place for ‘So What’ right now.” We still love ‘So What’ but we love that Pink isn’t still feeling the feelings that brought it to life and to our radios. And we absolutely love that Pink is open about her pregnancy losses, because losing a pregnancy is so, so common. It happens in up to 25% of pregnancies and it is no one’s fault, but when no one talks about, mothers feel alone and blame themselves. (Saying it again, it is not your fault, mama.) Pink’s music has always been powerful and inspiring, but with this declaration, “Hurts 2B Human,” may be her most impactful work yet.
