SSA baby names

Today reports that the SSA has been keeping track of America’s baby names since 1880. But, the idea of releasing a list of the previous year’s most popular baby names took off in 1970. Data is sourced directly from social security card applications. The administration also stays up to date with popular boy names and popular girl names by state.

The Acting Commissioner of Social Security, Kilolo Kijakazi, once said, “Just like your name, Social Security is with you from day one. One of the first things parents do for their newborn is get them a Social Security number. That makes Social Security the ultimate source for the most popular baby names each year.”
