The baby name experts at Nameberry just dropped the list of the most popular baby names of 2020, and it might surprise you.
According to Pamela Redmond, Nameberry’s CEO, the most popular baby names of 2020 (so far) are Luna and Milo. This isn’t a reflection of how many babies have actually been given that name recently—you need to look at Social Security Administration data for that, and unfortunately, COVID-19 has delayed the SSA’s official announcement of popular names. Instead, this list reflects how many people are looking up certain names on Nameberry’s website.
Here are the top 10 baby girl names:
- Luna
- Maeve
- Aurora
- Olivia
- Isla
- Ava
- Ophelia
- Eleanor
- Eloise
- Aurelia
These are the top 10 baby boy names:
- Milo
- Asher
- Atticus
- Oliver
- Levi
- Silas
- Arlo
- Leo
- Theodore
- Jasper
Redmond says Oliver, Levi and Leo are new entrants to the boys’ top 10, and she was surprised to see one name missing from the girls’ side this year: Cora.
“Cora stood at Number 8 on the popular baby name website’s list at this time last year, and had moved all the way up to Number 6 on the official 2019 list. But the name is too reminiscent of coronavirus so its popularity is waning.” Redmond writes.
The name Cora has been growing steadily in popularity over the last 20 years, according to the SSA. In 2018 (the most recent year we have data for) it was ranked 73, with 3,574 baby girls in the U.S. taking the name.
