Though the “third baby” moment was brief, it came during a larger, deeply honest conversation about early motherhood.
When it comes to parenting decisions, Michelle Obama had a clear answer when her husband, former President Barack Obama, floated the idea of having a third child — and her reaction is seriously relatable.
In a March 20, 2025 appearance on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast, the former First Lady reflected on parenting, from raising daughters in the White House to navigating postpartum emotions. Michelle and Barack share two daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23, but at one point, Barack was ready to expand their family.
“I was like, ‘I think I’ve been lucky with these two,’” Michelle recalled. “Barack was like, ‘We should have a third,’ and I was like, ‘Dude.’”
That single word—Dude—spoke volumes.
Michelle explained her hesitation came from a mix of gratitude and realism. “I felt lucky because my girls were such ‘good sleepers’ when they were babies,” she shared. Kylie, who is currently pregnant with her and former NFL star Jason Kelce’s fourth daughter, chimed in, saying, “I’d call it, too.”
Though the “third baby” moment was brief, it came during a larger, deeply honest conversation about early motherhood. Michelle also reflected on the emotional intensity she felt postpartum—not from depression, but from the overwhelming love and responsibility that hit her right away.
“I think the sadness or the postpartum that I felt with my kids really came from, like, you love these babies so much,” she said. “Immediately you’re connected and you think, ‘Oh my god, all you have is me. I feel so bad for you. I wish you had a parent!’”

Later, when the two moms discussed raising daughters, Kylie noted that both her husband, former NFL star Jason Kelce, and Barack Obama are proud “girl dads.” Michelle didn’t miss a beat:
“That’s because that’s what your husband deserved,” she said with a laugh. “It was like, you know, the karma was like, ‘Dude, you need a bunch of women in your life to take care of you around.’”
From White House prom planning to letting her daughters drive under the watchful eye of Secret Service agents, Michelle shared how she and Barack tried to keep things as normal as possible for Malia and Sasha—despite the pressure of living under constant scrutiny.
But in the end, it’s the little moments—like telling your husband “Dude” when he suggests another baby—that feel the most universal. Whether you’re on baby number one or wondering if your family is complete, sometimes one word says it all: I’m good.
