We are space obsessed around here and more than a little excited about the total solar eclipse happening on August 21, 2017 And, since the next total solar eclipse isn’t projected to cross North America for another few decades, I figured it was as good of an excuse as any to throw a party.

Here are a few tips on how you can also throw an epic children’s solar eclipse party with minimal preparation.

Stock up on eclipse-safe glasses

First a foremost, solar eclipse glasses are a MUST for your party: Not only do they protect your eyes, but they will make the viewing experience much better as well. I’ve noticed these glasses floating around a lot of retail shops, but if you can’t find any in your area, Amazon is the place to shop for packs of solar eclipse glasses. (? for free two-day shipping!)

Map the solar eclipse’s path

Although I’m not in the direct path for this eclipse, you don’t necessarily have to be for the perfect experience. Almost everybody in the continental United States will get to witness this historic event from the comfort of their own backyards or workplaces. If you want to see prepare for the view that your guests will get to experience, be sure to check out NASA’s website. They’ve got a great list of detailed maps that give you specifics about the event—including the path and time you can expect to see it in your area!

Offer some super solar snacks

What is a party without something to snack on? That being said, I love quick and easy snacks, especially for the kiddos! A few fun snacks that I plan to serve for the kids at our little get together include star shaped cheese bites, celestial cake decorated by my son and black and white sandwich cookies, which you can find these in almost any cookie aisle!

The great thing about these little cookies is that they mimic the eclipse: The yellow portion acts as the sun, while the black represents the moon. Plus, they sure make for some tasty educational elements.

Get crafty

To fill the time we’re waiting on the big event, I’m planning to set out supplies for this cool solar eclipse craft. I also love having lots of books on hand for some fun last-minute studying—I’ll be checking my local library for books on the eclipse to check out and have on hand for the party!

Set up a comfy space for the big show

Arrange a few folding lawn chairs, lay a few blankets out for the kiddos and get the telescope ready (just not for directly viewing the eclipse). Be sure to have glasses on hand for everyone and let the count down begin!

Happy eclipsing! ☀️
