One thing that can catch parents off guard is when they start to get outsmarted by their kids. You expect it’ll happen by their teen years or so — but you’re wrong. They actually start outsmarting you when they’re much younger, as this hilarious video of a toddler tricking his dad to get the toy he wants proves.

3-year-old Auggie Gallagher was determined to get his hands on a Fisher-Price DJ table toy, and when his dad posted a video of their negotiation over it in the toy aisle of a store, it quickly went viral.

“He’s a clever little guy and always thinking about how he can get the things he wants,” Auggie’s dad, Thomas Gallagher, told Today.com

In the video, Auggie is clutching the DJ set, which comes in a box about twice as big as he is. Text over the clip reads, “Told him he could pick out a toy that fits in his hand.”

“It fits in my hand,” Auggie announces to his dad, as he cautiously walks down the aisle, holding the toy against his body with both arms.

His dad replies, “You can carry it, but I said you can get a toy that fits in your hand. Can you hold it in one hand?”

You can actually see the wheels turning in Auggie’s head as he sets the toy down and works out how he’s going to play this situation to his advantage. Suspenseful music plays in the background (an excellent editing choice by Thomas) as Auggie sets the DJ set down to think… and then he picks it back up by shoving his hand through a carrying slot. It takes a massive effort, but he picks it up with one hand by leaning his little body over as a counterweight. The proud look on his face says it all.

“He really said challenge accepted dad,” a viewer wrote in the comments, which pretty much sums it up.

In typical toddler fashion, though, Auggie ended up leaving the store with a different toy.

“He lost interest and picked up a fire truck instead,” his dad told Today.com

Still, with that kind of determination, this kid is going places.
