Every so often, American Girl comes out with a new historical doll that covers a period of history that makes you go, “Ah yes, that makes sense.” The newest American Girl historical dolls do not do that. At all. Why? Because they’re set in 1999.

That’s right, a year when most of us were in the throes of puberty. A year that wasn’t so very long ago at all. As opposed to, like, when the Civil War occurred and when America was still comprised of just 13 colonies.

Nope, these new dolls, twins named Isabel and Nicki, are two young girls living in Seattle at the tail end of the grunge rock era. Instead of having family members perish along the Oregon Trail, these two likely have posters of Eddie Vedder on their walls and already go to Starbucks regularly.

In short, it’s weird. For many reasons. And one of those reasons is because Isabel and Nicki come with PIZZA HUT BOOK-IT ACCESSORIES.

Yep. The pin and the certificate and red pepper flakes and everything.

I like nostalgia as much as the next millennial, and this is perfectly detailed and hits all those sweet nostalgic notes. But. BUT. Is it weird that I’m disappointed that traditionally historical dolls aren’t “trendy” so American Girl has to cave to what’s cool in order to stay in business?

American Girl dolls first came on the scene in 1986. At that time, Molly was the most “modern” doll and her story was set in 1943. While there are currently historical dolls set in the 1970s and 1980s, this 1999 thing just feels…off. Like, what are even in these books?

And not because it makes This Author feel old! Because it doesn’t! It just bums This Author out that the historical dolls of yesteryear aren’t exciting to kids anymore. Many of them have even been retired at one time or another, only resurfacing for the aforementioned nostalgia reasons (aka millennial moms buying them for their kids in hopes they too will bond with Addie and Kirsten).

“Given the prevalent wave of ’90s trends and pop culture nostalgia, we’re excited to celebrate like it’s 1999 with our newest historical duo Isabel and Nicki,” says Jamie Cygielman, general manager of American Girl, in a press release.

At this rate, the next American Girl historical doll will be a Belieber.
