After 2023 was the year of Barbie, it makes sense that Mattel is looking for other toys that might inspire its next blockbuster. And it might have found the next big hit: There’s an American Girl Doll live-action movie coming, and millennials everywhere are not prepared for this.

Mattel has partnered with Paramount Pictures for the upcoming movie, which will be written and produced by Lindsey Anderson Beer.

“Growing up, my sister and I were American Girl girls,” Anderson Beer said in a statement. “I had Kirsten, and she had Molly. They didn’t feel like dolls to play with, rather real people whose worlds we got to imagine ourselves in. They are historically accurate toys and accessories that feature elaborate and immersive backstories uniquely suited to bring to screen.”

She continued, “I am so excited to tell a story that tackles the issues of girlhood in a real and compelling way, and proud to partner with Mattel Films, Paramount Pictures, and Temple Hill to create the American Girl movie I have wanted to see since childhood.”

American Girl dolls first launched in 1986, and they feature girls from different time periods throughout history. The dolls often come with books that help educate kids about the times they represent. The first American Girls, Samantha, Kirsten, and Molly — were from the World War II era.

This isn’t the only nostalgic toy that Mattel is looking to for movie content. After Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” became a runaway, record-breaking success at the box office, the toy company has movies in the works based on Polly Pocket (directed by Lena Dunham and starring Lily Collins) and Barney (produced by Daniel Kaluuya).

Now all that’s left to decide is who will play the iconic roles of Samantha, Kirsten, Molly, and the many other dolls that came later.
