29 years later, toddler recreates mom’s childhood photo—and it’s a viral hit

Parenthood beautifully connects the past and present, often in ways that surprise us. For Utah mom Marrin Howey, recreating a childhood photo with her son became a heartfelt tribute to her family’s love and history.

In a viral TikTok post, Howey shared side-by-side images highlighting the striking similarities between her 1995 photo and her son’s recent recreation. In the original picture, a young Howey stands on a chair at the kitchen sink in her parents’ first apartment, donning a red checkered apron. Fast forward 29 years, and her one-year-old son is pictured in the same setting, wearing the exact apron his mother wore.

The recreation was a deeply emotional experience for Howey. She told Newsweek that it “brought tears to [her] eyes” and left her speechless. “The picture was in my baby scrapbook, so I have known about it my entire life,” Howey said. “I wanted to recreate the picture because my son is the same age I was when my mom took the photo.

My mom is a sentimental person, and she kept a lot of clothes from when my siblings and I were little, including this apron. So, I set my son up in the kitchen to play at the sink. I started taking some photos and realized he was posing almost the same way I was 29 years ago. I was totally shocked.”

Sharing these photos with her family elicited amazement at the uncanny resemblance. When Howey posted the images on TikTok, they quickly went viral, amassing over 741,000 views and more than 176,900 likes.

Many were curious about the setting of the photos, noting the continuity of the family home. Howey explained to Newsweek that her grandfather built the house in 1978, and it has remained a multigenerational residence. Her mother was raised there, and after various family transitions, Howey and her husband moved into the remodeled basement apartment in 2020. This continuity has allowed the home to be a repository of countless family memories.

One commenter reflected, “If you love something and take care of it, it’ll take care of you. This apartment is so full of love.” Another remarked, “It’s like the same person at the same time with the same place.” The overwhelming response underscores the universal appeal of family traditions and the enduring bonds that connect generations.
