Nearly 60,000 car seats in these brands are being recalled by their manufacturer due to a car seat safety issue. According to Consumer Reports, the Safety 1st onBoard 35 Secure Tech, Maxi-Cosi Coral XP, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP Max, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP, Maxi-Cosi Mico Luxe+ and Maxi-Cosi Infant Base car seats each have bases may detach from the vehicle seat. This presents a huge concern, because a car seat can’t properly restrain a child in a crash if it detaches from the vehicle. A #recall for child seats was recently announced. Dorel Juvenile Group (Dorel) is recalling certain Safety 1st and Maxi-Cosi seats. A lower anchor failure may cause the #ChildSeat to detach. 59,450 units are potentially affected. https://t.co/g2C0vbENGS pic.twitter.com/IbbNJK7J0e— Center for Auto Safety (@Ctr4AutoSafety) March 9, 2023 Both Safety 1st and Maxi-Cosi are manufactured by the Dorel Juvenile Group. Owners who have the affected seats will receive replacement bases free of charge from the company. Parents who have the affected car seat models are still OK to use the car seat with the base they have or with the carrier only—but should ensure the seat is secured with the vehicle’s own seat belt in the meantime. Each car seat has this capability and owners can find instructions in the owner’s manual. In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Dorel says the defect was uncovered during routine compliance testing. However, Dorel says they haven’t received any reports of injuries related to the issue. Owners can register their car seat online at the manufacturer’s website, or by mail with the registration card provided with their seat. In the case of these recalled seats, head to https://www.safety1st.com/us-en/registration. Dorel will mail recall notification letters to owners starting on April 7, 2023.
