Home / News / Celebrity News Serena + Venus Williams’ Nike ad reminds us of the power of sisterhood Spoiler alert: The video will make you cry and then want to call your sister. By Heather Marcoux September 2, 2020 Rectangle Sisters share a special bond and a pain: As sisters, they have always been there for each other but their sport has always pitted them against each other. Even if you don’t have any talent at tennis, sisters can understand how people can view you as each other’s competitors when you’re often each other’s biggest supporters. In a new Nike commercial narrated by Venus Williams, the sisters prove that there is nothing stronger than the bond between sisters. Beware, this video will make you cry and miss your sister. In the commercial, the sisters speak as old tennis footage fills the screen. “Ever since we were little girls, you’ve compared us to each other. My game versus her game. My ranking versus her ranking. My titles versus her titles,” says Venus “You saw two tennis players trying to win a game, we saw two sisters changing it.” You Can’t Stop Sisters | Nike youtu.be “We were born sisters, but we’ve become each other’s biggest allies,” Serena explains. “For us, being sisters is everything. On and off the court, we’re each other’s biggest competitors, but we’re also each other’s biggest advocates. We are where we are today because we did this together.” As Motherly previously reported, research indicated that the bond between sisters can boost self-esteem and promote “positive social behaviors such as compassion and altruism.” This was highlighted in a 2010 study out of Brigham Young University published in the Journal of Family Psychology, which suggested that our complex relationships with our sisters basically make us better people (even if there is some sibling rivalry). “Even if there is a little bit of fighting, as long as they have affection, the positive will win out,” lead study author Laura Padilla-Walker, a professor in BYU’s School of Family Life, said in an interview with ABC News. “If siblings get in a fight, they have to regulate emotions. That’s an important skill to learn for later in life.” It’s clear the Williams sisters got those skills and through this Nike campaign, they’re making it clear that you can’t stop sisters.
