By Cassandra Stone November 29, 2021 WION/Twitter Rectangle A mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do, and sometimes that means hopping on your bicycle to ride yourself to the hospital. While you’re in active labor. Just ask New Zealand politician Julie Ann Genter! “Big news! At 3.04am this morning we welcomed the newest member of our family,” Genter wrote on her official MP Facebook page. “I genuinely wasn’t planning to cycle in labour, but it did end up happening.” You know, as you do. Genter writes that her contractions “weren’t that bad” when she departed for the hospital on two wheels around two in the morning. When she arrived 10 minutes later, they were incredibly close together and getting pretty intense—not that you can tell from the smiling photo she shared of herself in the parking lot before heading in! Genter, an avid bicyclist and member of New Zealand’s Green Party, initially planned to make the 10-minute ride while sitting in the front of a cargo bike driven by her partner, Peter Nunns. New Zealand outlet Stuff reports there was too much weight in her hospital bag, so Genter just “got out and rode” herself. An hour later, she had a healthy baby girl. “And amazingly now we have a healthy, happy little one sleeping, as is her dad,” Genter concludes her post. “Feeling blessed to have had excellent care and support from a great team, in what turned out to be a very fast (and happily uncomplicated) birth.” Julie Ann Genter, MP/Facebook Apparently, this isn’t Genter’s first rodeo when it comes to biking-and-laboring. CNN reports that she did the same thing when she was in labor with her first child, too. Julie Ann Genter, MP/Facebook As if we needed further proof women should rule the world, well, here you go. Congratulations to the healthy, happy family!
