Home / Entertainment Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’ documentary hits Netflix next week The film shares stories from her book tour. By Deena Campbell April 29, 2020 Rectangle Netflix is on a roll and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The media provider announced another original documentary that’s sure to be exciting. Becoming offers an up-close look at former first lady Michelle Obama’s life as she embarked on a 34-city book tour that highlighted the power of community and the importance of building connections. It’s directed by Nadia Hallgren (a filmmaker and cinematographer who directed After Maria) and will be released on May 6. In a press release, the former first lady explains, “I’m excited to let you know that on May 6, Netflix will release Becoming, a documentary film directed by Nadia Hallgren that looks at my life and the experiences I had while touring following the release of my memoir.” “It’s hard these days to feel grounded or hopeful, but I hope that like me, you’ll find joy and a bit of respite in what Nadia has made,” she continues. “Because she’s a rare talent, someone whose intelligence and compassion for others comes through in every frame she shoots. Most importantly, she understands the meaning of community, the power of community, and her work is magically able to depict it.” According to Gallup polling, Obama was voted the most admired woman in America and has scored highly compared to her colleagues (and even her spouse). Within just five months of being published in November of 2018, Becoming sold more than 10 million copies.
