Home / Life / Beauty & Style 6 expert tips for looking ah-mazing on Zoom holiday parties According to a celebrity makeup artist and hairstylist. By Deena Campbell November 4, 2020 Rectangle Back in March, no one thought that we would still be socially distancing from our friends and family by the holidays —but here we are almost at the end of the year and it looks like our Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations will be done virtually . It’s a bummer, but there are ways to make your Zoom parties fun and memorable. One way is to make sure your hair and makeup is on point. We caught up with celebrity makeup artist Juliette Perreux and celebrity hair stylist, Matilde Campos to give us the lowdown on the best hair and makeup tips for the holidays: Above all—don’t be afraid to try something new! Makeup tips for virtual celebrations 1. Even out your complexion “If your skin is in great condition you can totally skip this step and just use a little concealer but a bit of foundation or tinted moisturizer is a good place to start,” says Perreux. “Even a touch of foundation will even out your complexion and make you look put-together almost instantly.” Editor pick: IT Cosmetics your skin but better foundation + skin care 2. Consider your lighting Lighting is one of the most important things to consider while in a Zoom party. “It’s not imperative but if you can afford a beauty light I think it will help you feel your best and make the experience more life-like for your Zoom buddies,” says Perreux. “If you don’t want to spend tons of money, buy a small selfie light for under $20 on Amazon and just clip it onto your computer.” Editor pick: UBeesize selfie ring light 3. Use color We all need a little color in our lives, especially during the holiday season. “Just because we have to stay at home doesn’t mean we can’t be festive so bring a little cheer to yourself and others by rocking a bold red lip and some cheerful blush,” says Perreux. If possible get one that offers full-coverage that lasts. The last thing you want to do is leave your Zoom party to reapply your lipstick. Editor pick: Stila stay all day liquid lipstick 4. Think about the bigger picture Zoom calls aren’t HD so try to think about your beauty in terms of definition, color and shape. “For example, perfectly shaped brows will add definition and structure to your face,” says Perreux. “Whether you want to fill them in, or if you’re feeling lazy you can just use a tinted brow gel.” Using a tinted brow gel, lip liner and some mascara are great ways to make your features stand out. Editor pick: Glossier boy brow 5. Shade your face to create structure “Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of contouring, but on a Zoom call where we can sometimes appear a bit flat I think shading gives your face structure,” says Perreux. “Apply a taupe eye shadow in your eye socket, the hollows of the cheeks and along the jawline. Editor pick: MAC eyeshadow 6. Use powder “Set your makeup with powder to give a blurring effect to pores,” says Perreux. Editor pick: Laura Mercier smooth finish foundation powder Hair tips for virtual celebrations 1. Stock up on what you need Having the right products on hand can make the world of difference in times like these, says Campos. “The right dry shampoo can change your life in just a few sprays, the right hairspray can keep flyaways away, having a pomade or wax nearby can create a quick sleek look and the right hair cream or oil, can get rid of all the frizz,” she adds. Editor picks: Lunata Beauty volumizing dry shampoo Aerogel hairspray Bumble and Bumble thickening creme contour 2. Add accessories Finding the right hair accessory that you love can spruce up any hairstyle. From pins with pearls to oversized barrettes, adding a cute headband or scarf to any low pony can make it chic. A quick top knot can now be adorned by your favorite scrunchie. If you love to wear your hair down, you can add a barrette. Look for items you love, that match you and your style and your go-to hairdo’s, you can go from your everyday look to a night time holiday look, in no time. Find your go-to style During this holiday season, don’t be afraid to explore new hairstyles on zoom. “If you are usually one to wear your hair up in a top knot, try a low bun,” says Campos. “If you love wearing your hair in a ponytail, try a side braid. There are many simple styles that can be done in the same amount of time as your go-to hairstyles. Don’t be afraid to explore and make these your new go to’s.” 4. Utilize hot hair tools Using your hot tools can add a little more glamour to your night. “Look up a tutorial and find new ways to curl, wave or style your hair and make it fun,” says Campos. “I love using my cordless Lunata Beauty Hair wand and flat iron. I’m a multitasker so I’m usually doing 10 things at once. But having both of these tools have helped immensely as I am not barred by cords.” Editor pick: Lunata Beauty Cordless Curling Wand 5. Invest in a root touch up spray Like many women out there, getting to the salon to touch up your roots has been a bit tricky. And attempting it at home can be extremely frightening. “Invest in a root color touch up spray or powder,” says Campos. “These sprays and powders come in many colors, and cover gray beautifully. Find the right color for you and save yourself the hassle or worry and stress.” Editor picks: Magic Root cover up Oribe Airbrush Root Touch up spray Color Wow Root cover up We independently select and share the products we love—and may receive a commission if you choose to buy.
