It’s been 17 years since Dora the Explorer burst onto our television screens to teach a generation of kids about language and teamwork—but she may soon be getting a new, realistic look courtesy of a live-action Dora the Explorer movie. According to The Wrap, the Paramount project will introduce the audience to a teenage Dora who is moving to the city to live with cousin, Diego. Nick Stoller—of The Muppets—is slated to direct while Michael Bay—the “explosion movie guy”—is producing the film. The older wave of kids who grew up on Dora are now becoming moms and dads themselves, so it’s the perfect time to bring back the character from the beloved Nick. Jr. television series that ended in 2014. Dora fans may remember hearing about live-action film plans in back in 2015, when director Tom Wheeler—known for Puss and Boots—had been tapped to direct, but that project fizzled out. Unlike that false start, the future for the new Dora reboot looks brighter. Now the question is who will play Dora and Diego. (And how they’ll pull off the animated backpack…) As the The Hollywood Reporter notes, there’s no release date for the Dora the Explorer film yet, but the studio does have plans for a 2019 premiere.
