Fellow millennial pop icon Christina Aguilera is coming out in defense of Britney Spears, sharing a passionate defense of her former “Mickey Mouse Club” co-star in light of Britney’s testimony about her conservatorship last week. In her lengthy, in-depth testimony, Britney accused her father and his team of inhibiting her reproductive rights by preventing her from removing her IUD so she can’t have any more children and said she’d been forced to take lithium against her will for a long period of time.

Christina shared a powerful Twitter thread last night in support of her former pop “rival.”

“It is unacceptable that any woman, or human, wanting to be in control of their own destiny might not be allowed to live life as they wish,” Aguilera wrote, sharing a throwback photo of the two when they were kids.

“To be silenced, ignored, bullied or denied support by those ‘close’ to you is the most depleting, devastating and demeaning thing imaginable,” Aguilera continued. “The harmful mental and emotional damage this can take on a human spirit is nothing to be taken lightly.”

Many people have come out and shared their support of Britney in the days since her public testimony, most recently her ex-husband Kevin Federline and her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears—who has been catching a lot of criticism from fans who have been wondering if she’s part of the “family” Britney mentioned she’d like to sue.

“Every woman must have the right to her own body, her own reproductive system, her own privacy, her own space, her own healing and her own happiness,” Christina continued. She acknowledged that while she doesn’t have any inside information to what’s happening “behind the closed doores of this very layered & personal yet public conversation,” she wanted to offer her heartfelt support regardless.

“The conviction and desperation of this plea for freedom leads me to believe that this person I once knew has been living without compassion or decency from those in control,” Aguilera said.

Federline’s lawyer issued a statement about the mother of his children, saying “It doesn’t matter how positive of an effect a conservatorship has had if it’s having a deleterious effect and detrimental effect on her state of mind. So he supports her having the best environment for her to live in and for his children to visit with their mother in.”

Jamie Lynn addressed her feelings in a video she shared on her Instagram story yesterday.

“Since the day I was born, I’ve only loved adored and supported my sister,” she said. “I mean this is my freaking big sister, before any of this bulls-. I don’t care if she wants to run away to a rainforest and have zillion babies in the middle of nowhere, or if she wants to come back and dominate the world the way she has done so many times before, because I have nothing to gain or lose either way,” she added. “This situation does not affect me either way, because I’m only her sister who’s only concerned about her happiness.”

As for Christina, she concluded her thread by sharing how much she has in common with Britney, as the two both came to fame at the same time in the same genre of the same industry—and faced much of the same scrutiny.

“To a woman who has worked under conditions and pressure unimaginable to most, I promise you she deserves all of the freedom possible to live her happiest life. My heart goes out to Britney. She deserves all the TRUE love and support in the world.”
