Summer is almost here, and that means it’s time to break out the matching family swimsuits, breezy rompers and the pièce de résistance of every summer outfit–sandals! (Personally, it also means it’s time for my annual pedicure because, yikes.)

And while we admit the best summer days don’t involve wearing shoes at all, the truth is there’s a lot going on! From shuttling kids to camp to packing in a beach vacay or even a wedding, moms are on the go all season long–and nobody has time for blisters or aching feet. That said, it’s important to find a pair of summer sandals that are both comfortable and stylish.

How to shop for summer sandals

No matter your personal style, there’s approximately a billion choices out there to fit it. But while making your decisions keep these few things in mind.

  • Comfort: Comfortable sandals are an absolute must. Make sure you try them on later in the day when your feet are biggest to accurately assess their fit. If they rub at all, do not convince yourself “they’ll break in.” We both know it will end in hobbling and regret. Look for sandals with a good arch support and a cushioned sole. Your feet will thank you.
  • Style: Think of the outfits you plan on wearing most this summer. Choose colors and styles that complement, and when in doubt, go timeless.
  • Versatility: Sandals, more than any shoe style offer tons of versatile options suitable for running errands to lounging at the beach. Find a pair that works for your most frequent events. I’ve come to terms with the fact I’m either working, going to pilates or standing around in someone’s backyard. Cue the Birkenstock Arizona Chunky below.

I consulted with my fellow sandal-obsessed editors and friends to find out what styles they’re crushing on this season. And surprisingly, despite the plethora of summer sandals to choose from, many pairs came recommended more than once. I’ve also done the research to confirm they are in fact actually comfortable and will hold up longer than the paltry 12-ish weeks we get to wear them.

How to make your summer sandals more comfortable

If despite your best efforts you do find yourself with a pair that rubs (or you’re pregnant and dealing with swollen feet), I have a total pro tip for you. Forget the gross bandages that don’t work anyway. Two words. Foot Glide. Just glide the deodorant style anti-blister balm on the spots that rub (or just all over your feet) and you can trek yourself all over creation without a blister to be had. Brilliant.

No matter what your style or budget, there is a perfect pair of summer sandals out there for you. So get shopping and find the perfect pair of sandals to help you enjoy your summer!

Birkenstock Arizona Suede Chunky

Birkenstock

Arizona Chunky

$130

You can really never go wrong with Birkenstocks, but if you’re looking for something outside the traditional Arizona style, these are the ones. The combination of the classic Arizona upper and the Papillio platform sole with a just-funky-enough tread is the perfect blend of fresh and familiar. I purchased a black pair last summer which I’ve since worn in four countries with nary a blister to speak of. The break in period was non-existent and even though they’re still in almost perfect shape, I’m so tempted to expand my collection with this adorable pop of pink.

$135

If you’ve got any weddings or showers planned this summer, you need to know about the Camera Sandals from Aerosoles. Multiple sources have mentioned buying them in multiple colors because they’re the only heeled sandals they can wear!

Tory Burch Miller Leather Sandal

Tory Burch

Miller Leather Sandal

$198

At this point, it’s safe to call the Tory Burch Miller sandal a total modern classic. Yes, the designer slides are essentially fancy leather flip flops, but they’re flip flops you can wear practically anywhere for years. (One Motherly editor tells me she’s had a pair for five years, worn them through treks and travels all over and they’re still holding up.) They come in tons of colors ranging from neutrals to metallics and even though you can never go wrong with brown, I’m personally partial to the gold which IMO is fancy but equally versatile.

Reef

Cushion Vista Hi Sandals

$70

Over the past few years, this signature style from Reef has become a popular favorite and as a personal fan, I know exactly why. (I mean, besides the fact they go with everything from bathing suits to summer dresses!) At half the price of most Birkenstocks, you get all the comfort and support in a stylish and equally versatile sandal. The cork footbed offers an impressive amount of arch support and heel cupping while the cushiony PU sole is great for shock absorption. And even though the straps are made from PVC-free vegan leather, they never rub or dig. Perfect for chasing littles and looking pulled together at the same time!
