Home / Child / Child Shopping Guide The best phones for kids to keep them safely connected Parental controls are just one of many features on these phones for kids. By Casey Clark and Motherly Editors July 2, 2024 Rectangle We independently select and share the products we love—and may receive a commission if you choose to buy. In today’s day and age, phones for kids are becoming increasingly popular as concerns over safety arise. Plus, your kiddo or teen might want a phone because their friends and peers at school have one and they want to fit in — that’s completely understandable. According to Gitnux, in the United States, almost all children between the ages of 13 and 18 own a smartphone, while most of them also have a tablet or PC. This might seem like a bit of a shock, especially for those who grew up without a phone or with just a basic pager, but it’s the way of the world these days. With that said, phones aren’t just used as devices for communication anymore, but are the location of hundreds of social media applications and websites that for the most part aren’t safe nor appropriate for children. While you can have talks with your kids about internet safety, sometimes it’s better to take a more hands on approach and purchase your child a phone that has built-in safety features so you don’t have to ponder over whether or not it’s okay to go through your child’s phone. To help make the process easier, we’ve scoured the internet for the best phones for kids, including kids watch phones, that you can buy for your pre-teen, tween, or teenager when that time comes for them to hop on the bandwagon and foster new feelings of independence. For many parents, that can be a scary thought because the internet is filled with lots of inappropriate content. However, The Bark Phone offers an award-winning parental control dashboard where parents can customize what their kids have access to. For example, if you don’t want your child to have access to certain websites, social media, gaming, or streaming, simply block them and slowly give them access when the time is appropriate. It even monitors texts and emails for potentially digital dangers and sends alerts directly to you so you can stay in the loop. An additional feature allows parents to set timers on certain apps so it’s guaranteed your child isn’t on social media or staring at a screen all day — a feature we could all benefit from, right? Unlike other phones for kids, this one is more technologically savvy and modern as it’s styled after a Samsung A13. It definitely doesn’t look like a kids phone so your child will feel confident pulling out their new gadget in front of their friends. Pricing: Starts at 49 per month, includes phone, Bark premium and wireless service (unlimited talk & text with 4 GB data) Contract: Not required SHOP BARK Pinwheel Phone (Styles Vary) • $99-$599 phone / $14.99 per month service Smartphones may be on your kiddos radar, and if that’s the case, opt for a popular name brand to get the job done. And when it comes to entertainment, there are hundreds of kid-friendly vetted apps that can be downloaded not including social media and other potentially addictive games. Last but not least, It’s likely that your kiddo might be excited when they initially get their phone, so you’ll want to manage screen time.
